3 Biggest Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism Mistakes

Are you making these 3 big hypothyroidism mistakes?

If you have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is an autoimmune disease, then it’s crucial that you take the right steps so you can reverse it.

So in today’s video I wanted to share with you the 3 biggest mistakes you can make when dealing with Hashimotos thyroiditis and how you can avoid them.

Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism Mistakes

1. Listening to doctors

One of the biggest hypothyroidism mistakes people make is listening to traditional doctors.

I’ve worked with hundreds of clients over the years and I see it over and over again – most traditional doctors either don’t test for Hashimoto’s or they don’t recommend anything to people with Hashimoto’s (aka you’ll have to live with this for life.)

When you have Hashimoto’s, your body is attacking your thyroid gland every single minute of every single day without any let up.

Now it is definitely possible for people to have high thyroid antibodies and be asymptomatic (so exhibit no obvious symptoms) certainly in the early stages of the disease.

But as time goes on, eventually it will cause your thyroid gland to start failing and produce less thyroid hormone as it becomes more damaged.

If this isn’t bad enough then the very fact that you have an autoimmune disease which means your immune system is not functioning properly raises your risk of developing other autoimmune diseases, which can include Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis, MS just to name 3, so not a good situation to be in.

2. Too much iodine

Iodine is a natural element that we can get from the foods that we eat and also drinking water.

Iodine is very important for the health of your thyroid as you need it to produce thyroid hormones.

Now there is a belief held by some people that taking extremely high doses of iodine is a good thing for your health, including the health of your thyroid.

But the belief that you should take high doses of this mineral for your thyroid health is actually based on floored research where it was believed that Japanese people had an extremely high intake of iodine in their diet.

The American Thyroid association actually made a statement saying that high dose iodine supplementation can cause thyroid dysfunction and should be avoided.

The problem with taking too much iodine can be even more problematic if someone is suffering with what is called Hashimoto’s thyroditis.

Getting too much iodine can cause the thyroid to go out of balance and cause the level of thyroid antibodies to increase which is all bad news for your thyroid gland.

If you have Hashimoto’s disease or have been tested and have a high level of thyroid antibodies, then you need to be extra careful with taking any extra iodine and that includes getting it from sea vegetables as well.

3. Low carb diets

The thing is that when you eat a very low carb diet like the Paleo or Keto diets then they can actually impair the function of your thyroid gland.

And if your thyroid fails to produce enough of the hormones that your body requires, you can then start experiencing low functioning thyroid symptoms, such as:

  • weight gain
  • intolerance to the cold
  • low energy levels
  • weakness
  • hair loss
  • mood issues even depression
  • and many more…

Studies have shown that going low carb can affect the thyroid gland by:

  • A drop in metabolic rate and energy production (1)
  • Causing a fall in the active T3 thyroid hormone (2)
  • And by raising the thyroid blocking Reverse T3 hormone levels (2)

All three of these negatively impact your thyroid function and so your general health.

We work with many ladies who suffer with thyroid issues where their thyroid gland under-performs, especially if they follow a Paleo, Keto or other low carbohydrate diet.

Actually, studies have shown that plant diets are associated with a reduced risk of thyroid issues, whereas diets that contained animal products or omniovre diets were associate with an increased risk of hypothyrodism. (3)
